Melissa Duge Spiers on Leaving High-Control Religion

I joined Melissa Duge Spiers for a conversation about growing up inside a high-control religious system.

We talked about the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the kind of control it exerts over everyday life.

Melissa described what it was like to be raised in an environment where personal instincts were discouraged and obedience was expected.

We talked about how that experience carries forward. Into the body. Into relationships. Into the way a person understands themselves.

We also talked about sexuality, repression, and the long process of trying to make sense of what was learned early on.

And we talked about why this still matters beyond individual experience.

Because systems like this don’t exist in isolation. They shape the world around them.
